HISTORY OF CEDARWOOD FARM

Cedarwood Farm was built in circa 1885 on 75.5 acres by Jacob Davis and his family.  It was called Cedarwood, due to the presence of thousands of cedar trees surrounding the property. The Davis family cleared and farmed much of the land.

Jacob was born in 1845 to Nathan and Mary Davis.  Jacob was a local peddler when he met and married Francis.

Due to the serene beauty and quality of the air, people from the nearby cities would visit the Adirondacks to improve their health.  Jacob and Francis opened their home to these folks to help supplement their income.

Jeanne Robert Foster the poet stayed in the house as a child.  She was Jacob's niece and helped around the farm and took music lessons.

In the early 1900's an addition was added to the right side Of the main house.  The addition was used as a huge country kitchen with the servants quarters above.

In 1917 the house was deeded to Francis' sister & brother in-law with the stipulation that they care for them until their death.

Jacob died in 1918 and Francis, a few months later from the flu.

The architectural style of the house is early Victorian.
